We’ve been travelling around Australia for the past 6 months in our caravan, sharing destination inspiration, tips and tricks. We are stoked to be embarking on another adventure as we join the Follow the Sun Relay. We’re going to show you some cool places to take the kids and share some family travel advice. So jump aboard!
When visiting the Kimberleys you absolutely have to stop at Lake Argyle. It’s one of our favourite spots in WA and we were stoked to get to return with the ‘Follow the Sun Relay’.
Lake Argyle is Australia’s second-largest freshwater reservoir with over 18 times the volume of water of Sydney Harbour! The lake is nestled amongst a vibrant red billion-year-old landscape, which is pretty spectacular especially when the sun is rising and setting.
Lake Argyle is an easy 70km drive from Kununurra or if you decide to stay you can grab a site or cabin at Lake Argyle Resort. Either way you’re going to want to visit the resort just to swim in one of the most scenic pools in Australia! Their infinity edge pool over looking the lake is equally famous for its views as it is the freezing cold pool water so we were very surprised to discover the water to be a pleasant 29 degrees on this visit! Last time it was a case of get in, get the pic and get out! But this time round we spent nearly 2hrs relaxing in the pool. Ahhh the perks of visiting in off-season!
Be sure to take a drive along the Ord River Dam Wall for some awesome views, but remember to leave the caravan or trailer unhitched as they are prohibited on this section of road. The sealed road winds you towards the day use picnic area at the base of the Dam, with picnic tables and amenities. You’ll also get a view of the Hydro Electric power station which pumps out enough renewable energy to power Argyle Village, Wydham, Kununurra and the Argyle Diamond Mine. Impressive hey?
Tours operate year round at Lake Argyle so we jumped aboard a bright orange boat and headed out for an epic arvo with Lake Argyle Tour. This was a big Aussie bucket list experience for us and it definitely didn’t disappoint. It was fascinating learning about the history of the area and meeting some of the wildlife.
Did you know the lake is home to 35,000 freshwater crocs? Not that it stopped us from taking the plunge from the roof of the boat into the warm waters of the lake to soak up the sunset. Beer in hand of course! It was a truly awesome experience. Hint – If you are visiting in peak season it does pay to book ahead as the sunset tour sells out quickly.
After the tour we headed back to Lake Argyle Resort to grab some dinner at their onsite restaurant. The meals were bloody delicious, reasonably priced and were at our table in no time! Winner, winner – fish and chip dinner!
The drive back to Discovery Parks Lake Kununurra was a peaceful one with two sleeping children all tuckered out from their big day! And with their bed literally a mere metre away transitioning them was a breeze. Perfect end to a perfect day on the ‘Follow the Sun Relay’.
