Our next guests on the Follow the Sun Relay are the Reeve family of Lapping Oz. Their first stop from Melbourne to Sydney is Lake’s Entrance.
We are the Reeve family (Adam 39, Mia 38, Jett 11 and Skye 9). Our family has been travelling full time across Australia for the past 14 months in a 4WD and caravan, and have been blogging about our experiences. We are so very excited to be a part of the Dometic Follow the Sun Relay and sharing our road trip experiences for the Melbourne to Sydney leg!
There are two popular ways to travel between the Melbourne and Sydney. The Hume Freeway is the most direct route, taking you the inland way and crossing the border at Albury. Our road trip takes the coastal route, cruising along the Princes Highway and entering New South Wales 35 minutes south of Eden.
We answered a callout for explorers and adventurers who wanted to be a part of this amazing road trip in a Winnebago Motorhome. We collected our home on wheels from Apollo Motorhome Holidays at Tullamarine and headed straight to our first destination- Lakes Entrance. We were blown away by how easy it was to navigate the Winnebago in comparison to towing a caravan. It was a pleasure to drive and because our excitement levels were so high, the time flew by!
We were greeted by very friendly staff at the NRMA Eastern Beach Holiday Park, located on the north side of town. The kids were so excited to play on the jumping pillow and made friends almost immediately. We discovered the park has a nice layout, with many sites bordering the play area, making it a family friendly park. Even though the park is a short stroll to Eastern Beach, it features a swimming pool, which we found ideal for lazing about after exploring the town itself.
A local woman fishing with her two sons on Eastern Beach recommended we take the footbridge over to Main Beach, visit the lookout and have a meal at Water Wheel Beach Tavern at Lake Tyers Beach. So we strolled across the footbridge and spent some time with our feet in the sand before heading up to the lookouts on the Princes Highway. We are so glad we did, the views are amazing and we really enjoyed reading the information boards about the history of the town.
On Sunday morning we made time to visit the local markets, where Skye picked out a lovely handmade hair bowtie and I chose a preloved book to read when we have some downtime.
Our visit to Water Wheel Beach Tavern almost didn’t happen as we were unsure if we could park the motorhome in the carpark. By some miracle, we found a spot right next to the tavern- there is no way we could have parked any closer!
The bar staff invited us to try some of the craft beers on tap, which we happily obliged before ordering our sald and pepper squid, garlic pizza and a children’s meal. To say our food was amazing is an understatement! We rated the squid so highly, the dish is up there with the best in the country. All of our meals were delicious and it was easy to tell they were made with fresh ingredients and a whole lotta love. Chatting with the locals is the best way to discover legendary spots like this one!
This is not the first visit for our family to Lake’s Entrance and we always love to stop and discover something new about the region each time.
