Carnarvon

Carnarvon was another town that we didn’t know too much about prior to arriving, but we quickly discovered there is actually SO much to see and do!

As soon as we arrived in town, we checked into the Wintersun Caravan and Tourist Park, where we got heaps of tips and directions for things to do in and around the area.

As well as having friendly and knowledgeable staff, the park itself is lovely and we were really comfortable here. If you’re planning on stopping by, make sure you arrive for either the famous Tuesday ‘spud night’ or the Sunday pancakes! We got a great site under the trees and the sunset was beautiful- the park is also fully equipped with a great pool and bbq area, so it would be perfect if you’re travelling with a bigger group or family.

While we were driving into town, we noticed there were a LOT of fruit plantations and shops, and we were recommended to stop by Bumbak’s, which was conveniently close to our acommodation. We each tried one of the fresh ice creams, and we even came back the next day to pick up some of the preserves- they have a great variety and everything is delicious but it is cash only, so make sure you come prepared.

We then headed into town to enjoy make the most of a beautiful afternoon.

We parked near the water and enjoyed a stroll along the jetty to Whitlock Island Station, and then a long walk to the old One Mile Jetty and heritage precinct. It took a while to walk all the way through, but you can also drive around and it would only take a few minutes.

The jetty itself is currently closed due for safety reasons, but community members are working to get it restored and  it is still worth taking a look at!

The area is also home to a cafe, museum, shearer’s hall of fame, displays and more! It’s quite interesting to take a  look at and you could either stop in quickly or spend a fair bit of time here.

The next morning we headed to the Space and Technology Museum, which is Carnarvon’s top tourist attraction and something we had both been interested in checking out. The museum was great! Carnarvon has quite an extensive space and technology history, and the area has played an extensive role in space programs and communications.

They even have an Apollo Simulator, which is a lot of fun! To add to the experience, you can even dress up and look the part with outfits and helmets. They also have a lot of informative displays, videos and interactive exhibits.

After making the most of the museum, it was time to hit the road for our next destination – Geraldton!
