Wander to Wonder Oz sets off for another leg of the Follow the Sun Relay. Read on to see the Davey family in Kununurra!
Fresh from our Katherine adventures we buckled up and made ourselves comfortable for the long drive across the border into Kununurra, WA. Thankfully the motorhome makes travel a breeze and the little wanderers handled the long drive like pros. If you’re coming this way don’t forget there is a quarantine checkpoint as you cross the border into WA, so make sure you eat all your fresh fruit and veg prior to arriving and check out their website for details on what you can and cannot take across.
After close to seven hours of driving time we breathed a sigh of relief as we pulled into Discovery Parks Lake Kununurra and set up home in a ripping lakeside spot. We all headed straight for the pool for some much need cooling off and stretching of the legs before hitting the hay.
Kununurra is the gateway town to the East Kimberley and the perfect base to explore El Questro, Lake Argyle or even the Bungle Bungles. But there is also plenty to see and do without even leaving the town! Here’s what the Davey family got up to:
An absolute must do is a visit to this volunteer run Kangaroo sanctuary where Mandy and her team rescue, raise, rehabilitate and release hundreds of roos. We got to bottle feed dozens of joeys and have unlimited cuddles all while learning a truckload about these adorable Aussie icons. A visit costs just $10 per person with all proceeds going towards the animals.
Be sure to head up to this lookout to take in some great views of the township and Lake Kununurra. Better yet bring a couple of cold ones and catch a stunning sunset. There is a sealed road to the top and then it’s an easy 1.2km return walk to the lookout.
If you have a 4×4 then take a cruise across this impressive concrete causeway gushing with water of the Ord River. There are two sections to cross then you can either continue towards Wyndham or turn around and have another go! Just ensure the water levels are safe and watch out for crocs! We didn’t think the #FTSRelay folk would appreciate us testing out the Winnebago so we just watched from the sidelines.
This fantastic family owned and run distillery make the only rum in WA, and not just any rum – award-winning rum! We popped by for a tasting paddle, but you can also join a distillery tour, which run daily. There is a handy kids colouring corner too, which kept the kids entertained while Mum and Dad were sampling the goods.
Kununurra is famous for its huge sandalwood plantations. We called into the factory’s display room to learn about the harvest process and sample some products. We picked up some sandalwood insect repellent coils, which we love for keeping those pesky mozzie and midgies away.
The arboretum was opened in 1984 on the bank of Lake Kununurra and is full of trees planted by celebrities who have visited the town. It was fun wandering around reading the plaques and spotting the likes of John Farnham, Baz Luhrmann and Princess Anne. There is also a nice playground for the kids who to be frank didn’t find the trees all that interesting.
So if you’re planning a visit to Kununurra, don’t forget to take time for the smaller attractions, as they are the heart and soul of the town. Oh and do yourself a favour and purchase a gorgeous hand carved boab nut off one of the local Indigenous people. The craftsmanship is amazing and the nuts are definitely a unique souvenir to treasure!
Happy Travels!
