A Barossa Valley to Renmark itinerary from Mel and Brenden of All Around Oz. This is part of the Follow the Sun Relay!
After an awesome couple of days in the beautiful Barossa Valley, we were ready to hit the road and head to Renmark.
Our first stop was in the small town of Blanchetown where we caught our first glimpse (for this trip) of the majestic Murray River. We stopped in a park right on the edge of the river where Lock No. 1 is located. The Murray River has a series of locks and weirs and the locks allow for the passage of vessels through the weir. There were also lots of information boards which explained more about how the locks and weirs work and also a bit about the history of the Murray River.
Our next stop was Waikerie, another small town right on the river. It was the perfect spot to stop for lunch, with plenty of parking for ‘Winnie’ and lots of shady trees to sit under. If you fancy stretching your legs, there is an awesome cliff top walk that follows the edge of the Murray River.
One thing we didn’t know is that Waikerie has some amazing ‘Silo Art’. As we were heading out of town we spotted it and spent ages walking around admiring the detail in the three murals. Make sure you head around the back to see the stunning ‘Regent Parrot’ on the back of the first silo. It will take your breath away with its beauty!
Back on the road, we headed for Barmera where we stopped at Lake Bonney. This is another gorgeous spot with parkland right along the foreshore area. Just out of town we came across the ruins of the Lake Bonney Hotel. It was operated as a hotel in the mid to late 1800s and had 11 rooms. It was then a boarding house until 1907.
After an interesting day of travel, we arrived in Renmark. We headed straight to the Big 4 Renmark Riverfront Holiday Park. This is a huge park located right on the river’s edge. Our site was just a few steps back from the water.
Most of the sites are large, shady and can easily accommodate a large van and a vehicle. The camp kitchen was immaculate and very well equipped. There is also a games room, T.V. room, and a gym!
It is an awesome spot for families and has a large pool area, a water park, jumping pillow and playground. But for us, we loved sitting on the river’s edge and watching the many boats and water-skiers coming and going. It was the perfect spot to cool off each afternoon.
