Australia has some of the most impressive lookouts, landscapes and leisurely walks to take in the beginning or end of the day. Here are some of our favourite spots to catch sunrise and sunset in Australia, whether you’re an early riser or dusk seeker.

For the early risers

Less than an hour from Canberra in the ACT lies the rugged Namadji National Park. The challenging 8 km (5 mile) hike to Gibraltar Peak is well worth the effort to watch the sunrise over panoramic views.

The perfect introduction to Uluru in the Northern Territory is joining the Desert Awakenings tour. Experience the amazing transformation of colours and life as the desert awakens with the sunrise. Uluru and Kata Tjuta are your backdrop.

Nudgee Beach in Queensland is a photographer’s dream during sunrise. Watch the hues of pink, purple, orange and yellow cast over the ripples of exposed sand during low tide for that perfect shot.

Just south of Perth’s CBD in Western Australia is Kings Park, a very accessible spot to watch the sun rise over Swan River in front of a silhouetted city skyline.

Hidden away in The Blue Mountains National Park one of Australia’s most famous lookouts, Govetts Leap, where you can watch the sunrise over the misty Grose Valley in this stunning World Heritage-listed National Park.

Be the first in Australia to see the sunrise by trekking up the 1156m ancient volcano Mt Warning, in New South Wales, before dawn. The five hour return 8.8km  walk boasts 360 degree views including the stretching coastline from the Gold Coast to Byron Bay.

For the sunset seekers

A 2.5-hour drive from Hobart in Tasmania is the Freycinet National Park, a picturesque peninsula of towering, pink-hued granite mountains. You can follow the 90-minute walk to catch sunset over the white sands and calm blue waters of Wineglass Bay

The absolute bucket-list item! Bruce Munro’s internationally acclaimed art installation Field of Light set in the heart of the Northern Territory. Catch the installation at sunset as 50,000 solar-powered stems light up and glow through the night.

Just 20 minutes from the centre of Adelaide CBD is The Glenelg Pier. This spot offers outstanding views up and down the South Australian coast. There’s a line-up of trendy bars, restaurants and cafes that sit adjacent to the beach. It’s undoubtedly a great spot to enjoy a glass of South Australian wine while the sun goes down.

At the Great Ocean Road’s southernmost point in Victoria stands mainland Australia’s oldest surviving lighthouse, Cape Otway Lighthouse. Watch as the sun begins to set over the beautiful views of the expanding deep ocean.

So there you have it, some great spots to catch sunrise and sunset in Australia. Find some great spots to camp before or after your viewings!
