Road safety is one of the most important elements of a caravan/camping trip.
Road traffic injuries cause around 1.35 million deaths and up to 50 million injuries each year.
It’s vital to remember the essential road safety tips to keep not only yourself but your family and other drivers safe on the road.
We listed some helpful strategies to help keep you, your fellow drivers, cyclists and other road users as safe as can be.
Check them out here:
Cut Back on the Lead-Foot
An easy strategy to keep in mind, but one drivers often need reminding for is to slow down.
Stick to the speed limit and save yourself the dangers caused by speeding for both yourself and others on the road.
Speeding consistently contributes to around 41 per cent of road fatalities.
Not only will you save yourself from a hefty fine, but slowing down could save your life.
Be Alert
Road rules aren’t just guidelines to follow- it’s written law that you have to ensure you’re following all signs and speed limits.
Stay alert and make sure you’re not missing any critical signage on your next drive.
Take Adequate Rest Breaks
When taking a long trip, make sure you’re giving yourself enough time to relax.
Every few hours- hop out of the car and stretch your legs or grab a bite to eat to give yourself a break from the road.
Don’t Drive Tired
Statistics show that around 20 to 30 percent of fatal crashes result from drowsy driving.
Make sure you’re well-rested before hitting the road.
If it’s possible, ask a mate or partner to drive if possible when feeling tired.
Don’t Distract Yourself
If you know you’re a person who gets easily distracted- make things easier for yourself and remove the problem.
Whether that’s popping your phone in the glove box, removing a rear-view mirror accessory or turning down the tunes while driving.
Expect the Unexpected
When driving, you should always anticipate the unexpected.
Whether it’s another driver failing to indicate or an animal running onto the road- you should always be ready.
Be Aware of Pedestrians and Cyclists
Make sure to keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists while driving, especially in the dark.
Pedestrians and cyclists can often creep up on you unexpectedly, and it’s important to ensure you’re maintaining a safe distance.
ALWAYS double-check your pedestrian crossings- even in the evening hours when it’s less crowded.
It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
