Do you know how to hitch your tow vehicle?

The video below is the second instalment of our Road Safety series and is dedicated to hitching your caravan or tow vehicle to refresh your knowledge these holidays!

Gary Gardiner, our host, is a professional towing instructor and runs his own business ‘Total Towing Set Ups’. In addition to running his own towing training business, Gary hosts the increasingly popular towing safety seminars, which are hosted at major caravan shows in QLD.

Over the coming weeks and months, additional towing safety videos will be presented, creating a library of instructional and information towing videos easily accessible for your use.

Gary’s hitching tips:

  1. Align vehicle tow ball under coupling.
  2. Lower coupling onto tow ball by lowering the jockey wheel, ensure coupling lock is properly engaged.
  3. Attach safety chains (cross them over if you have two chains).
  4. Connect electrics lead, check indicator and brake lights operating correctly.
  5. Check tow vehicle is in park and the handbrake is engaged before releasing RV handbrake and removing jockey wheel.
