Do you have a favourite outdoor camping activity for your kids? Let us know in the comments!
Are you planning a camping trip with your little ones and wondering how to keep them entertained outdoors? We asked our Facebook community for their favourite outdoor activities for kids while camping, and they came up with some fantastic ideas! Whether it’s exploring nature, playing games, or simply enjoying the great outdoors, here are some activities that are sure to keep your kids engaged and entertained during your camping adventure.
Playing simple but fun outdoor games can be a great way to pass the time while camping. Alana M suggests playing a game called “Sticks”. The game requires 8-10 sticks, arranged parallel to each other and 6 inches apart. The kids run through the sticks placing one foot between each stick, being careful not to touch any stick. The last child to run through the sticks leaps over the last stick, picks up a stick and places it where they landed. This continues until someone touches a stick, misses a space or puts more than one foot in a space.
Games like this are fun and energizing outdoor activities for kids to enjoy while camping or during a road trip pitstop. Some other game suggestions included:
Allana D and Jos P suggested Scavenger hunts as an outdoor activity that is always a hit with kids! A really simple way of doing this is to create a list of items for them to find in nature, such as pinecones, different types of leaves, or specific wildlife. It’s a great way to encourage exploration and observation skills while having fun outdoors.
Amanada J suggested taking the kids on a hike or exploring nearby creeks. Let them collect wood, observe wildlife, and enjoy the natural beauty surrounding the campsite. If the creek is swim friendly, this is a great time to take the kids for a dip, find a rope swing and enjoy some water activities for kids! Hiking is also an excellent way to get exercise and bond as a family while experiencing the wonders of nature.
Fishing is one of the classic outdoor activities for kids of all ages while camping. Amanda W and Leigh H recommend teaching them how to cast a line, bait their hook, and patiently wait for a bite. It’s not just about catching fish; it’s also about spending quality time together by the water and appreciating the tranquillity of nature.
Another unique outdoor activity suggestion for kids came from Ashlea W.J with River cricket! River cricket adds a unique twist to the traditional game. Set up a game of cricket with the batter on land and fielders in the water. It’s a refreshing way to play a beloved sport while cooling off in the river on a hot day.
Taking leisurely walks and exploring the natural surroundings are great outdoor activities for kids. As suggested by Hope E and Jim M, it can be a great opportunity for education about the great outdoors. You can point out interesting plants, animals, and landmarks along the way. Nature walks provide opportunities for learning, exercise, and quiet reflection in the beauty of the outdoors.
One of the most special outdoor activities for the kids while camping was suggested by Leisa R, Rodney A.S and Richard McD. Gathering around the campfire in the evenings for marshmallow roasting, storytelling, and singing campfire songs. This is a time-honoured camping tradition that brings families together and creates lasting memories.
Kristy-lee E and Sharon R encouraged parents to take advantage of windy days to fly kites with the kids. Watching the colourful kites soaring in the sky is a thrilling experience that never gets old, and they are easy to pack for a simple but fun outdoor activity with the kids!
Looking for fun and quiet outdoor activities for kids? On clear nights, lie down on blankets and gaze up at the stars. Star gazing presents a great opportunity to teach kids about constellations, planets, and all things space exploration. Quiet time like this is essential for recharging and appreciating the beauty of nature.
From traditional campfire activities to creative outdoor games, there are plenty of ways to keep kids entertained while camping. Whether you’re exploring the wilderness, playing creek or river games, or simply enjoying each other’s company, camping provides endless opportunities for adventure and fun with the whole family. So pack your bags, pitch your tent, and get ready for an unforgettable camping experience!
